The current EU data protection rules date from 1995. Back then, the internet was virtually unknown to most people. Today, 250 million people use the internet daily in Europe.
Think how that has changed our personal data landscape through the explosion of ecommerce, social networks, online games and cloud computing.
The European Commission has therefore adopted proposals for updating data protection rules to meet the challenges of the digital age. In particular, the proposals will strengthen protection of your personal data online.
These proposals will now be debated by the Council and the European Parliament before they can become law.
